ENDING PICKY EATERS: THE FRENCH METHOD

ENDING PICKY EATERS: THE FRENCH METHOD

Tips To End

Do you struggle at the dinner table with picky eaters?

If you’re like most any other moms, your answer might be “yes” and “please help me!”

When I was growing up, I was the pickiest eater EVER. I would literally fall asleep at the dinner table. Put a green bean in my face and it was instant rebellion. It’s funny how we forget about our own personal experiences when we have children of our own and feel like we have lost control of them and don’t know what to do!

When my first daughter was a toddler, I fed her the foods I knew she liked the best. Don’t like green beans? No problem- here are your favorite sweet potatoes instead. However, by doing this, I was reinforcing that SHE made the decisions, that she was in control. I also amped up her sweet tooth. Throughout the years, I played short-order cook and did my grocery shopping around what she liked.

Years later when I met my husband and his children (now my stepchildren, two in fact!), I learned a new way to deal with the daily meal struggle. Now, my husband is from France, where kids DO NOT control the dinner table. They eat what they are given and grow up eating a very wide variety of foods.

By learning what he had done with his children (who are far from picky eaters), I was able to get my own kids to open up to new foods and end the battle with picky eaters.

Here are some tips on what I call “The French Method” of ending picking eating:

1. Don’t Stress Out

By stressing out, you will stress them out. They will associate mealtime as being a negative experience. Having a meal together should be enjoyable for everyone. You’ve been working hard all day and maybe you haven’t seen each other much. The best way to influence a child to eat something new is by making it an enjoyable experience.

2. Don’t Be A Hypocrite

Too many times have I heard, “my kids is such a picky eater, he never eats his veggies.” But are you eating your veggies? If you want your child to eat healthy, you have to be a role model and eat healthy yourself.

3. Pass Over Some Control

I know it sounds like a counterintuitive thing to do, but kids like to feel like they are the ones making the decisions. They’re little Napoleons, control-freaks. The more you tell them to do something, the more they will want to rebel. Let them know that it’s their decision whether or not they want to eat foods that will help them become healthy and strong. Don’t force it. If they still don’t eat it, just remove the plate and let them know that there’s nothing else to eat until the next meal. And don’t cave in with snacks later on! They aren’t going to die of starvation over missing out on one meal.

4. Let Them Participate

How many times have your kids asked if they could help you in the kitchen and you turned them away because you didn’t want the hassle? A great way to get them to try something new is to ask them to pick out something new that they found in the grocery store, take it home, and let them help you prepare it. It will spark their interest and make them feel like it was their decision.

5. Put It On Their Plate, Even If It Sits There

The more kids are exposed to a new food, the more likely they will try it. Put it on their plate even if you are 99% sure they won’t eat it. Just put a little bit. Eventually, the shock of asparagus on their plate will wear off and they won’t see it as intimidating.

6. Don’t Play Short-Order Cook

No matter how tempted you are to make something you know they like just to avoid the disappointment of them not liking something else, don’t give in. Once they realize that what is served for dinner is all there is and will be, they will learn to eat to avoid being hungry later.

7. Cut Back On Snacks

Kids need to eat in-between the standard 3 meals a day (but 5-6 smaller meals a day is better!). However, be careful of snack options. Loading up on juice or milk before dinner will only lead to kids who won’t eat their meals. It’s best to stick to water and whole veggies and fruits (carrots with dip, an apple, etc).

Keep in mind that picky eating doesn’t end instantly. It takes time and patience. Just stick to your guns, stay calm, and follow these tips. You’ll find that meal times will be easier, more enjoyable, and will lead to healthier habits.

8 MINDFUL TIPS TO STOP MINDLESS EATING

8 MINDFUL TIPS TO STOP MINDLESS EATING

Tips To StopThis Is How To Turn Mindless Eating Into Mindful Weight Loss.

It’s 9:00 PM and the kids are in bed, you FINALLY have some time to yourself, and the crave bears are calling you for a little treat. You hop over to the kitchen and grab something quick before the commercial is over on TV. By the time your favorite episode ends, you find that you finished off an entire bag of potato chips. You just suffered from a case of Mindless Eating.

Stress, habits, and busy schedules… These are all too common reasons that we eat the wrong things, too much, and at the wrong times. Mindless eating strikes every day.

A recent hot topic in weight loss is mindful eating. That’s the opposite of mindless eating. This is important considering we live in an on-the-go society with little time to think about what we are putting in our mouths or plan for meals ahead of time.

So what is mindful eating? Believe it or not, it’s pretty simple. It’s just paying attention to your body’s desires, needs, and the experience of eating. Mindful eating turns an experience of eating without paying attention into an experience of really being in the moment of what you’re doing.

By doing this, you will actually eat less, eat healthier, and may lose weight.

So how do you do this? Here are 5 secrets to eating mindfully:

  1. Love Your Body

If you don’t care about yourself, how can you make any improvement? The first thing you need to do is love your body. No matter how much you want to change, you need to love what you have first. THEN you make improvements, like losing weight or toning the backs of your arms that you think could use a little help. The more you love your body, the better care you will take of it.

  1. Pay Attention To Yourself

Your belly rumbles for a reason. If you aren’t keeping up with what it needs, it’s going to let you know. Ignoring it will only make things worse: slower metabolism in fact. Also, don’t confuse thirst with hunger. Think about how much water you have had each time you think you’re hungry. You should be drinking at least 6-8 glasses of water a day. While you’re eating, pay attention to whether or not you’re satisfied. Otherwise, you will just overeat and regret it, and that’s not worth it!

  1. Practice Acceptance

Are you majorly craving some chocolate right now? Have some. Just don’t go crazy with it. Accept that you really love chocolate. It doesn’t mean you have to eat an entire bar. Have a small square and savor it. If you satisfy your cravings this way, you’ll be less likely to binge on a lot of it and regret it.

  1. Eat And Only Eat

Don’t do anything else. I know it’s hard to do when we feel like we have so many other things we could be doing. Work can wait. Take that lunch break and get away from your computer screen. Stop emailing. Get off the phone. You’ll end up eating less.

  1. Make Time

Just like #4, other things can wait. Even if you’re driving, pull over for a few minutes and pay attention to what you’re about to eat, whether or not it tastes great or if you shouldn’t order it again. Mealtime should be mealtime. Make time for it.

  1. Focus On What’s In Front Of You

Appreciate what you have. Does it look like something that will benefit you? Like a really colorful salad? Imagine its nutrients running through your blood stream and repairing cells in your body. Or… does it look disappointing? Like a box of “browns,” fries, chicken tenders, and a biscuit? Imagine the grease giving you indigestion, the fat clinging to your body, and the tired feeling you will have afterward.

I encourage you to take a step back in your busy day, and try this out. I think you’ll find that you’ll feel more alive, more eager to take care of yourself, and be confident that you can make a positive change in your life.

Hope this helps, ladies!!

THE SURPRISING TRUTH ABOUT YO-YO DIETS AND AGE

THE SURPRISING TRUTH ABOUT YO-YO DIETS AND AGE

The Truth AboutYo-Yo Diets andAgeLet me show you exactly how to eliminate yo yo diets from your lifestyle.

Yo yo diets creeps up on you. When I was in my 20’s, I ate what I wanted, I drank what I wanted, and I knew that no matter what, I could easily get back into shape in 2 weeks with just a few gym workouts.

That all changed in my mid-thirties. I noticed that I needed to work out longer and harder, and it took twice as long to get back into shape. I felt like it happened overnight! This was the result of having children, changes in hormones, and a busy schedule that made it difficult to find the time to stay as active as I needed to be.

I also used to be a lover of Yo-Yo diets. The Atkins Diet, the Slim Fast Diet, the grapefruit juice diet… A quick way to lose weight, but UNSUSTAINABLE. As soon as the weight came off and I started to eat like a normal person again, a few pounds here and there started to reappear and then I had to do it all over again. It was tiring!! The yo-yo dieting was destroying my metabolism.

Ladies, think of it this way: you lower your calorie intake to lose weight or deprive your body of essentials (carbs, for example), so your body reacts by saying, “Hey! I’m not getting what I used to, so I’m going to slow down to conserve energy.” BOOM! Your metabolism drops and your body begins using less energy and requiring less energy. But then you start to eat like a normal person and your body doesn’t realize that it should metabolize those calories faster. It’s too worried that the food will stop like it did when you were dieting.

I’ll use a metaphor for example. During the Great Depression, people lost tons of money. They were poor and struggling. Once the Great Depression was over and they had sufficient money, they were still scared of losing it again, so they didn’t want to spend it. This is how your metabolism works!

Yo-Yo dieting, combined with a naturally decreasing metabolism as you age (beginning as early as age 25!), is not a good combination. It will only cause you to regain the weight you lost or worse, gain more than you had before. Yo-Yo diets increase insulin levels in your body, which will make you put on belly weight.

Want to stop the cycle of Yo-Yo dieting? Here are some tips to boost your metabolism after the age of 35 without doing anything crazy:

  1. Eat More Frequently

Don’t wait until you’re absolutely starving to eat. If you do that, your body is already slowing down metabolism. What you want to do is to let it know that food will keep on coming and it doesn’t have to worry. Eat 5-6 SMALL meals a day. Here are examples of what small meals look like:

Meal #1

  • 1 oz. Brie cheese
  • 1 cup of grapes
  • 14 halves of walnuts
  • 5 whole grain crackers

Meal #2

  • 3oz grilled salmon
  • 1 cup spinach salad with olive oil
  • 1/4 cup of red quinoa

Not bad at all, considering you can eat 5-6 of these a day, huh? You’ll find that you will be eating more while boosting your metabolism and losing weight without feeling hungry.

  1. Light Exercise

Light exercise is actually BETTER for keeping a steady metabolism than working out like crazy, which will also make you very hungry and prone to bingeing on foods the next day. Take a moderately fast walk through your neighborhood and enjoy the sunshine (unless you live in Seattle). Past the age of 35, slow weight loss is better when it comes to keeping it off.

  1. Protein, Protein, Protein!

As we age, we our protein needs are higher and we lose muscle mass. Muscle cells eat up more calories than any other cell in your body. Give your muscles the protein they need. I always keep hard-boiled eggs in the fridge for a convenient way to have protein throughout the day. And don’t throw out those egg yolks! Try to have protein with every meal. By simply getting plenty of protein, you can boost your metabolism, causing you to burn an extra 150 to 200 calories a day.

Hope these help, ladies! Remember that today is a great day to start!

Keep an eye out, there are plenty more tips to come.

THE SECRETS OF SKINNY FRENCH WOMEN

THE SECRETS OF SKINNY FRENCH WOMEN

Have you ever wondered how skinny French women can eat all that bread, cheese, wine, and not get fat?

I wondered the same thing years ago before I met my French husband. When I spent the summer in France for the first time, I was amazed at how thin the women were and how they seemed to eat whatever they wanted without any worry. After spending nearly 3 months of summer living in the French lifestyle, having five-course meals twice a day, chocolate croissants for breakfast, and (I’ll admit it) drinking a vineyard’s worth of wine, I was afraid to step on the scale when I got back home. Needless to say, I actually lost weight!

Five years later and 20 pounds lighter, I am here to share the secrets of skinny French women with you.

1. They walk

Do you fight for the parking space closest to the entrance of wherever you are going? This doesn’t really happen in France. The first thing I noticed is that the French walk everywhere. Gyms are also virtually non-existent, except for the dudes with biceps bigger than my waist. For those skinny French women, light exercise is key. Instead of sweating in the gym for hours, they just walk as much as they can. You can too. Take the space farthest from the entrance, take your dog for a longer walk than usual (he’ll appreciate it), and if the store is nearby, skip the car.

2. They only drink wine, water, and coffee

These are the 3 essentials of French women. They drink a lot of water to stay hydrated, they drink a lot of coffee, and they love their wine. Red wine, especially. Red wine is pretty much the only type of alcohol that has any health benefits, too. It’s a great antioxidant and it prevents cardiovascular disease when consumed in moderation. Moderation means 1 glass a day for women and 2 for men. However, I think that should be up for debate, considering French women usually drink more than that and their health is generally much better than that of American women.

3. They relax

It’s something so simple yet so hard to do! But really… Stress raises your cortisol levels (the “belly fat hormone”). Take some short breaks throughout the day and try to relax more. And take that lunch break! The French typically take a 2-hour lunch break. I know that doesn’t really exist in America unless you are one of the lucky few, but at least eat your lunch somewhere other than at your desk and enjoy the “you” time. Which brings me to the next tip…

4. They take time for themselves

One difference I have noticed between French and American women is how much time they take to focus on themselves. Whether it’s shopping for something new to wear, a coffee date with a girlfriend, or reading a great book, French women know that they need to take time for themselves. When you treat yourself as someone you love, you’ll do more to have the body of your dreams and gain the health for a longer life.

5. They eat in moderation

French women eat whatever they want. BUT, in moderation. This is the #1 key to weight loss success. I think we all know that “diets” don’t work. At least, not in the long run. That weight comes back eventually, because it’s too hard to live without the things we love. Have the chocolate. Have the wine. But be mindful of the portion size.

6. They have table manners

Table manners aren’t just for sitting pretty. When I went to France and was eating pizza (yes, they eat plenty of it), it took me a while to realize I was the only one eating with my hands, while all the skinny French girls were eating with a fork and knife. Then I realized you end up eating slower when you’re cutting pizza up, and then you feel full sooner because your body has had the time to signal your brain that you’ve had enough. So take notice of what you might look like at the dinner table. Are you a slob devouring your food? Or are you a lady with dignity enjoying a meal? The mirror will eventually tell you.

I hope these have helped, ladies! Remember, this doesn’t all happen overnight. If you want to lose weight and KEEP IT OFF, it’s a lifestyle change. It takes a little time at first, but soon enough you will start losing weight without even trying.

5 WEIGHT LOSS SECRETS TO EATING YOURSELF THIN

5 WEIGHT LOSS SECRETS TO EATING YOURSELF THIN

5 Secrets To Eating Yourself Thin

Here are the weight loss secrets I use all the time.

I hear the question all the time… How can I have a French chef husband and still be in shape? To tell you the truth, I have lost 20 pounds since being married to this handsome maker of all things yummy. And, without ever feeling hungry and always enjoying the foods I love the most! I have learned some secrets to eating yourself thin, and I am going to share them with you.

Keep Your House Clean

And when I mean clean, I mean don’t bring all the bad stuff from the grocery store into your house. If it’s not there, you won’t be tempted to eat it. It’s as simple as that.

Never, EVER, Skip Meals

Skipping meals is a no-no for weight loss. You might think that you’re doing yourself a favor by cutting out all those calories, but you’re setting yourself up for a metabolism disaster. Skipping meals slows your metabolism down, and if you’re in your mid-thirties or later like I am, this means extra s—l—o–w… Keep in mind that the MOST IMPORTANT meal of the day is, you guessed it, breakfast! Eat breakfast like a queen, lunch like a princess, and dinner like a dairymaid.

Eat What You LOVE (In Moderation)

Are you majorly craving some chocolate? Have some! It doesn’t mean you have to eat a ton of it. A little square will do. Let yourself feel like you’re having a treat sometimes. If you avoid the things you love, you will find yourself overindulging in them later on and will only lead to regrets.

Fill Up On Fiber

Leave on that apple peel, don’t peel your potatoes, and make fiber your friend. You should be eating at least 20-35 grams of fiber a day. Most Americans get FAR LESS than that. Fiber helps fill you up without all the extra calories, digest your food better, will help you lose weight, and also reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke.

Water Yourself Down

You should be drinking at least 6-8 glasses of water a day. Feeling hungry? Think about how much water you had today. You might be confusing thirst for hunger. I always keep a large glass of water near my bed. That way when I wake up, I can rehydrate after a long night of fasting, start my metabolism, and get my day off on the right foot.

Ladies, I hope you have a WONDERFUL day and use these simple secrets of eating yourself thin.

I will keep posting more tips to help you achieve your goals, so keep an eye out!
